Pulsar From Mars

video upload by Samples From Mars

https://samplesfrommars.com/products/... "Controlled Chaos From Our Favorite Modern Drum Machine
The Pulsar 23 is a semi-modular, analog drum machine from SOMA Laboratories, and the second in their line of "organismic" synthesizers. Despite its intimidating look, this mashup of classic and modern analog synthesis provides immediate fun and inspiration, so it's no wonder it was your #1 choice for what we should sample next! (via a survey we sent out earlier this year).

So much more than just blips and beeps, the Pulsar's 23 modules give this machine an un-rivaled, vast sonic pallet that allowed us to sculpt some of the most unique loops and one-hits we've ever made."

War of the Worlds 2023 AI by Cinematic Laboratory w/ Cameos from Todd Barton and Walker Farrell

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"The Hague, Netherlands, August 25, 2023 — Step into the immersive musical world of modular artist Cinematic Laboratory as it unveils its latest sonic endeavor, 'War of the Worlds 2023 AI.' The album showcases the fusion of an audio comic with music, 3D field recordings, cutting-edge AI text-to-speech dialogs and Chat GPT ghostwriting. By combining handmade sounds, real analog voltage, and digital magic, Cinematic Laboratory stretching the boundaries of 21st century 'home studio' music production.

'War of the Worlds 2023 AI' features eight music tracks that traverse between B-movie clichés and the real challenges of living in an uncertain future. Each track creates a realm where imagination intertwines with reality, taking listeners on a journey where our own fear is a formidable adversary. What sets this album apart is the groundbreaking use of AI voice actors, infusing the characters with artificial ‘overacting’ and bringing the story to life. They seem to have a mind of their own and turned the story into a comic beyond production control. It just shaped itself. While the use of 'deep fake celebrities' remains a topic of debate and controversy, it adds a bit of realism to the album. The album is accompanied by a single release called ‘Elevator Music 2023 WOTW’ which also doubles as a trailer.

Synopsis: The machinery of an extinct alien Krell civilization decides to bring a gift to Earth. The ability to materialize and realize anything you can think of. After receiving a mysterious transmission, a desert festival for open minded thinkers will be the catalyst for a worldwide invasion as our deepest fears and nightmares manifest themselves and turns against us. The Earth turns into a purple jungle infested by huge tripods, drones, zombies and fungi. Meanwhile, scientists Daisy, Brian and Walker patch up a dream machine that helps us to channel our imagination in a more constructive way. They manage to inspire the US President and together they bring this ‘immersive musical audio comic book’ to a ‘happily ever after’.

Starting from H.G. Wells' timeless book and the 1956 classic movie 'Forbidden Planet,' Cinematic Laboratory's interpretation of 'War of the Worlds' takes an unpredictable direction. Instead of an invasion from Mars, the album delves into the internal battle of the human mind, where our fears and nightmares manifest through ancient alien technology. It is a compelling exploration of the power of imagination and its ability to shape, disrupt, damage, and heal our lives. It's a force that cannot be defeated by the common cold. Just imagine growing up in a world where your reality is forged and can’t always be trusted.

As an emerging modular artist, Cinematic Laboratory is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of musical expression and storytelling. The compositions blend various modern genres and influences, creating a sonic landscape that is both alien and strangely familiar. With 'War of the Worlds 2023 AI,' Cinematic Laboratory aims to establish itself as a rogue ambient music pioneer, exploring new frontiers while sharing the experience on YouTube. The Lab currently boasts over 500 videos online and is a highly appreciated channel devoted to modular synthesis. The album features cameos from Todd Barton and Walker Farrell who make a lot of waves in the modular community.

'War of the Worlds 2023 AI' is available on all major streaming platforms on August 25. Bandcamp offers a special download and contains scripts and an instrumental bonus album.

Jamuary 2023 Mars Machine

video uploads by Mars Machine

First 10:
1. Fireflies | Modular Eurorack Beat | Erica Synths LXR, Basimilus Iteritas Alter #Jamuary2023 01
First Video this Year! I started this Patch trying to use my new Erica Synths LXR Eurorack Module for a melodic voice which I think turned out pretty nice. Bloom and Pamelas New Workout are responsible for the sequencing. Main Melody 1: LXR receiving v/oct from Bloom, sent through Mimeophon. Main Melody 2: 2hp Pluck sequenced by Bloom, mixed with Noise and filtered by Forbidden Planet through Disting Delay. Bass is Plaits, distorted and filtered by Peradam and XAOC Zagrzeb. Kick: Basimilus Iteritas Alter Drums: Erica Synths LXR
2. Karmesin | Modular Eurorack Beat || #jamuary2023 02 ||| Queen of Pentacles, Acid Rain Chainsaw
Drums: Queen of Pentacles & some additional Hi-hats made with white and pink noise Main Melody: Acid Rain Chainsaw Bass: Basimilus Iteritas Alter Background Texture is Plaits with the model Input modulated.
3. SHORES | UK GARAGE on MODULAR || #jamuary2023 03
I've been wanting to make some kind of UK garage, burial inspired piece on the modular. I think it turned out pretty neat!
4. EMBERS | Drum and Bass on MODULAR || #jamuary2023 04
Here we go again, 4th day of #jamuary2023! I try to keep it as musically diverse as possible, so I tried to make some Drum and Bass this time. I think it's quite alright for the first try!
5. Below 0 | #jamuary2023 05 || Eurorack ||| Patch Notes on Screen
It's been a long time since I wanted to use the Forbidden Planet as an Oscillator and I never found the place in a patch since it is always almost on regular filter duties. But I managed this time and it sounds very cool!
6. Erica Synths LXR Eurorack Live Techno Jam | #jamuary2023 07
#jamuary2023 lets go! Part 6! I filmed this video when I just got the Erica Synths LXR, wanting to showcase some of its sounds! I think it sounds absolutely massive!
7. Leaving | Eurorack Drum and Bass || #jamuary2023 07
More Drum and Bass! I'm really happy with the drums in this. I stumbled across the melody by accident just fiddling with Bloom.
8. Happy Accidents | Chill Eurorack Beat | #jamuary2023 08 | Patch Notes
This was a happy accident by slowing down one of my other #jamuary patches. I then changed the drums and the main melody so it fit the tempo better.

Oregon Coast Dreams - Synth Bliss

video upload by Mamotreco

"Sometimes a place leaves a musical feeling within. The Oregon Coast is such a place. For this reason, I wrote this synth track to capture it. Enjoy the ensuing Badalamenti Wave. #synth #soundtrack #oregoncoast

Used Ableton Live, Samples From Mars and Arturia to make the music you hear. A looping pattern of overlapping melodies reminiscent of Twin Peaks, run their course until some shy string machine pads come into play.

Current channel music compilation: https://mamotreco.bandcamp.com
Previous music releases available here: https://synthandsundry.bandcamp.com

Welcome to Mamotreco! This channel covers a lot topics: synthesizers, electronic instruments, making and listening to music and photography. The aim is to post weekly, though that isn't always possible. Thanks for watching."

MARS Musical Audio Research Station Iris Farfisa Bontempi - Ares Software

video by Museo del Synth Marchigiano

You can find an additional post from 2012 featuring the MARS Synthesizer here.

"In this video we demonstrate how the Ares software allows you to program the Mars card, Isa card inserted in the computer, connected via Scsi connector to the Ics816 audio output card.

The Musical Audio Research Station (MARS) is a programmable specialized digital machine for real-time audio applications which has been entirely developed by the Italian Bontempi-Farfisa research institute IRIS.
The MARS workstation is composed of:

• one or more sound boards, called NERGAL connected to one or more audio units;
• a PC running the graphical interactive development environment called ARES.

The first version of MARS, which has been presented at the ICMC92 was running on Atari computers.

The sound generation board is a full size standard IBM ISA card running at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz.

The board may be divided into three main sections: DSP, control and mixer sections.

The DSP section contains two dedicated IRIS DSPs called X20 with their respective program and sample memories. These DSPs are memory mapped onto the microcontroller memory area.

The X20 is a fully programmable DSP. Its architecture is highly parallel and allows pipelined operations.

Its internal arithmetic is 2’s complement fixed point with a 16 x 16 bit multiplier and a 24 bit arithmetic and logic unit.

Each X20 has two blocks of internal data memory which may be addressed in parallel. It also contains a 512 x 64 bit words of external program memory, and may access to external sample memory. The sample memory is supported by SIMM modules with 4 up to 32 megabytes of DRAM.

Each X20 provides four audio input channels and four audio output channels. The audio signals are managed on 16 bits. The X20s may be used in parallel or in serie, by sending the four outputs of the first one to the four inputs of the second one.

The control section is managed by a proprietary real-time operating system, called RT20M, running on a MOTOROLA MC68302 microcontroller. The RT20M manages all the MARS objects described previously, and all their interactions with the DSP section, the mixer section and the external world. It also controls any communication through the three ports available on the board: MIDI, RS232, and a special parallel one for high speed connection to the PC’s ISA bus.

The mixer section controls a set of predefined audio mixing operations among boards and audio units.

Each board have one connector to/from the audio-unit, and four connectors (two inputs and two outputs) which allow multi-board links. This last feature allows to create a MARS boards network with a parallel, a serial or a mixed configuration using one or more audio units.

Two types of IRIS audio units are available for NERGAL: low-cost and professional.

The low-cost unit is a small external box (1/3U) with two monophonic input lines, four monophonic output lines, and one stereophonic headphone output.

The professional audio unit is a 2U standard rack module. It is modular and may pilot up to 8 input/output analog channels and 8 input/output digital channels. Each unit can be shared between two different NERGAL boards."

Roland TR-8S Performance with FM Drums only!

Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Cedric of Patchwerks shows us just how capable the FM drum's are on the new TR-8S 2.0 firmware. Pay close attention to the CTRL knobs as that is where you will find the sound "morphing" happening during the performance.

From Roland:
Born of the most famous and influential drum machines ever made, the TR-8S combines the best of its Roland heritage with modern production techniques and comprehensive sound design. The result? The most complete drum machine to date—a forward-thinking, performance-tuned instrument unlike any other. Build your dream kit from the most iconic drum sounds of all time, otherworldly FM sounds, and the finest selection of samples from our vast library—or go even further by importing your own custom samples. Tap, tune, and tweak with hands-on controls and production tools that make your patterns move and groove. And why keep this kind of percussive power confined to the studio? The TR-8S was literally made to play live.

Stellar FM Sounds!

The FM sounds in the TR-8S are unlike anything this side of Mars, conjuring silvery drum hits and twisting tails to augment your tracks. The Morph parameter is an ultra-expressive macro control that lets you sweep through an array of sonic variations, wildly manipulating FM depth, ratio, and feedback with simple knob movements.

808 DAY 2020 - Launchpad Pro Finger Drumming Performance

Nular Music

"Happy 808 Day everyone! This finger drumming performance is my way of celebrating "808 Day" 40 years after the release of Roland's iconic drum machine, the TR-808.

I ran some 808 drum samples (from Samples From Mars) through 4 different signal chains between which I switched live during the performance using 4 of the Launchpad Pro's pads. As always, all played live, no editing or quantisation.

Enjoy!"

How To Load Synth Presets into the PG8X VST plugin

Published on Apr 26, 2020 Synth & Sundry

"Several viewers want to know how to load preset sounds into the PG-8X VST plugin synth emulating the classic Roland JX-8P. This is because when you first load up the PG8X in your DAW, the plugin's preset banks are empty which can throw off even the most experienced producer. This is why I put up this quick tutorial.

If you want to hear the PG8X in action, listen here: [Three videos below. Additional posts here]

Free Roland JX-8P synth emulator - PG8X VST plugin

Published on Oct 31, 2018 Synth & Sundry

"Massive synthwave vibes from this synth VST plugin. It's a faithful emulation of the classic Roland JX-8P synth, taking interface cues from the optional PG-800 hardware controller.
You can hear a few patches found on the internet. The PG8X VST synth plugin can load in original JX-8P patches over sysex. You can hear some pads, leads and brassy tones in a few melodic examples of what this free plug-in can do."

Fairlight CMI Series I SN A058025

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a very rare, complete Fairlight CMI Series I - serial number 25, built in May 1980.

I bought it in 2015 with the intention of setting it up in my studio and maybe getting the keyboard case refinished at some point. But instead it's been sitting in my workshop and has been rarely used since I bought it.

Very mixed feelings about offering this system for sale because I'd rather keep it, but I know it will only sit longer. I'm sure there are musicians, collectors, studios or museums out there who could make better use of it, or at least give it the care it deserves.

I'm not in a rush to sell it, so I'm putting it out there to see if there's any interest at the price point I'm interested in. I'm basically just trying to break even, and this being a very rare complete Series I, hopefully may have appreciated or at least maintained its value since I bought it.

The synth collector I purchased it from told me it was once Bob Moog's demo system. Some of the disks and paperwork that came with it have "Bob" written on them, but I cannot confirm this. It may even be the system Bob Moog demoed in the Jeff Harris YouTube video clips.

You can see it in action in my YouTube video (search for Fairlight Mars Lasar) or when I exhibited it at VCF East 2015 (search for Scott Joplin Fairlight).

The photos attached here were taken a few weeks ago, so the machine still powers up and boots up fine.

Screen is still crisp with very little screen burn and almost no screen rot. Light pen still works fairly well. Keyboard is typical for a Series I, very light plastic action, but works fine. Both floppy drives work. QWERTY keyboard works fine, and all keys respond with tactile feedback. The entire power supply was replaced in 2015."

Making Techno with Music Robots

Published on Sep 10, 2018 Moritz Simon Geist

http://sonicrobots.com

Details:
"After playing Mutek, CTM and Moogfest, and years of fabrications, tweaks, tests – winning also Visual Music Award 2017 and Initiative Music 2017/18 – robotics engineer and media artist Moritz Simon Geist releases world’s first techno album entirely played by real robots!

Produced by Mouse On Mars' Andi Thoma and due out in November, 'Robotic Electronic Music' is Moritz' debut album, to explore and pioneer the sounds of the more than ever robotized society of nowadays.

'Robotic Electronic Music' is pure mechanical music: precise, pneumatic patterns repeat themselves exploring the sound of mechanics, but none of its beats is like the other.

The album is being preceded by an EP due out in October, inaugurating Sonic Robots Records
(distributed by Kompakt), a label all about automations, mechanics and... techno."

Making Techno with Robots - Behind the Scenes!

Published on Sep 10, 2018 Moritz Simon Geist

"New sounds from the future! Here I explain, which robots I used for the Techno robots video. Everything you hear and see comes from robots. No syntheziser, samplers or CGI added! We want to show a futuristic way of creating music - without synthezisers, but with robots in the real world!

All Robots were built by Moritz Simon Geist and the team of SONIC ROBOTS. This production was funded by the Initiative Musik and the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen.

Camera and Cut: Robert Arnold / Cuthead"

And the press release:

Moritz Simon Geist, media artist and robotic musician, publishes his first record. It is the world's first techno record played entirely by self-made futuristic robots.

All of the sounds on his records are played by robots: small motors that beat on metal, futuristic 3D-printed robo-kalimbas, salvaged parts from old hard drives that click and cut. It took Geist several years to build, tweak, test and play all his DIY robotic instruments.

His 'Sonic Robots' try to push the boundaries of the imaginable. He did so already in 2012 with his well-known oversized 808 robot – an iconic drum machine gotten real, 4 by 2 meter, filled with robotic parts which play the instruments live and in front of the audience.

Now, Moritz Simon Geist goes even further to discover the unknown and futuristic world of techno robotics. For this quest, he teamed up with the Berliner sound wizards from Mouse On Mars and dug deep in the history of mechanical music and experiments of early electronic music.

the SPACE CASE tape echo

Playlist:
1. SPACE CASE Tape Echo Demo Series - 3 - SYNTHS - Arpeggiation Character and Oscillation (Roland SH-101)
2. SPACE CASE Tape Echo Demo Series - 2 - DRUM MACHINES - Feedback Rhythms from Spaced Hits (brand new 808 and 909 samples by the venerable Samples from Mars in Brooklyn NY)
3. SPACE CASE Tape Echo Demo Series - 1 - VOCALS - Traditional Use and Explorations (Bob Marley solo vocal)

"The Space Case is a new tape echo for the modern vintage workflow. Each is hand made in limited batches in New York at The Center for Memory and Control. The machine operates at line level, and the sound can be described as being a combination between the original slap machines hooked up to consoles in the 50's (the original echo invention) and the classic Hi-Z devices from the 60's and 70's. It is inherently well suited for things like synthesizers, drum machines, and other unbalanced line level musical instruments and equipment. Hi-Z/Guitar and Balanced Line connectivity can be added (see features).

- Six time ranges
- a line level insert TRS jack for adding external processing of the echo/feedback path (i.e. using a synth or any other device to add resonance, more eq, and any other shaping you want)
- A time adjust knob for a wide sweep within each range
- Powerful feedback with plenty of self oscillation
- Echo tone
- Independent echo and dry output level
- Opamp overdrive at the output stage that can be applied to dry, echo, or any blend of both. (you can use the machine as a distortion unit with no tape/echo involved)
- Classic "playback and record" operation with speed differences. The machine is designed to be able to go down to near dead stop, so one can create extreme changes in analog tape fidelity and timing by recording at one speed and playing back in another. Feedback, tone, and speed/time can be performed live and recorded/played back with further tone and speed changes.
- A small loud speaker that is driven by the same opamp overdrive, effectively giving you a small but saturated and strong sounding "guitar amp" with whatever signal you're using
- A VU meter!
- 1/4" TS in and out
- Optional HI-Z/Guitar/Instr breakout pedal with a Crimson transformer, true bypass footswitch and a bonus DI function
- Optional transformer balanced XLR Line I/O with two Crimson transformers
